history

Beginnings

Oriole Records was founded in 1921. From the beginning there was an exclusive contract between the label and the department store chain McCrory's , as all records were only available from McCrory. In the first few months of the company's history, the records were pressed by the Cameo Record Company . A large part of the catalog was bought up by other labels and sold under their own name. The records, which cost only 25 US cents, were qualitatively below the average of the time. Oriole was known to publish pieces by various artists on the A and B sides.

Part of the ARC Records

From catalog number 250, all records were made by Plaza Music and distributed by Banner Records . Together with Banner, Plaza, Cameo, Challenge and other cheap labels, the company merged in 1928 to form the American Record Corporation , ARC Records. As part of this company, Oriole continued to release records and from 1930 also introduced country , hillbilly and blues catalogs .

Due to the depression of the record industry and the rise of the radio, Oriole lost a lot of economic power in the late 1930s. The label's last records came out in January 1937. A few months later, ARC was sold to the Columbia Broadcasting System .
