Harvie Swartz

Harvie Swartz ( Harvie S , born December 6, 1948 in Chelsea / Massachusetts ) is an American jazz bassist .

Swartz studied piano and composition at Berklee College of Music before switching to bass at the age of 19 and working with musicians such as Al Cohn and Zoot Sims , Mose Allison and Chris Connor . In 1973 he went to New York, where he performed with Thad Jones and Mel Lewis , Gil Evans , Chet Baker , Lee Konitz , John Abercrombie and was part of Barry Miles ' group Silverlight from 1974 to 1976 .

In the second half of the 1970s he toured Europe several times with David Friedman's group Double-Image and was a member of Steve Kuhn's quartet from 1979 to 1981 . After working with Stan Getz , he released his first album as a band leader in 1980, followed by ten more. He also worked on recordings of John Abercrombie, Mick Goodrick and Mike Stern .

Swartz has been teaching jazz bass at the Manhattan School of Music since 1983 ; he has given guest lectures at the Hochschule für Musik Köln , McGill University , Berklee College of Music , Eastman School of Music and others.

In the 1990s he traveled to Cuba to study Afro-Cuban and Latin American music and founded the group Eye Contact , with which he performed at festivals and in 1999 recorded the album Havana Manana . In addition, Swartz worked with Juan Carlos Formells and Virginia Mayhews Band, with Karl Berger , Paul Motian , with Ed Sarath and with Sheila Jordan (including duo CD Old Time Feeling , 1982).

Since 2001, Swartz has only performed under the name Harvie S because he was tired of his last name being misspelled all the time. The first album under the new name is New Beginning .
