Virginia Mayhew

Virginia Mayhew (born May 14, 1959 in San Francisco , California ) is an American tenor saxophonist , composer and arranger of modern jazz .

Live and act

Mayhew has been on the New York music scene since 1987. She studied at the New School and played for several years in the group of Al Gray and with Claudio Roditi . As a musician and arranger, she also worked with Sahib Shihab , the Diva Jazz Orchestra , Earl Fatha Hines , Cab Calloway , Frank Zappa , James Brown , Norman Simmons , Junior Mance , Toshiko Akiyoshi , Doc Cheatham , Joe Williams , Clark Terry , Chico O ' Farrill , Ursel Schlicht and Nnenna Freelon . She leads her own septet and toured several times through Asia and Eastern Europe. She is the musical director of the Duke Ellington Legacy Ensemble under the direction of Edward Kennedy Ellington II. Mayhew released a tribute album to Mary Lou Williams in 2011 , which she presented with her quintet at the WDR 3 Jazz Festival in 2014 .

In 2009 she was named a Rising Star by the Down Beat .
