Joe Temperley
Joe Temperley (born September 20, 1929 in Lochgelly , Scotland , † May 11, 2016 ) was a British musician ( baritone saxophone , soprano saxophone , bass clarinet ) of modern jazz .
Live and act
Joe Temperley first played in dance orchestras and in the bands of Harry Parry , Jack Parnell , Kenny Graham , Tony Crombie and Tommy Whittle . He then became known as a member of Humphrey Lyttelton's band , of which he was a member from 1958 to 1965. In 1965 he moved to New York City , where he worked with Woody Herman , Buddy Rich , Joe Henderson , Duke Pearson , the Jazz Composer's Orchestra , the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra , Charles Mingus ( Let My Children Hear Music ) and Clark Terry . In October 1974 he toured with the Duke Ellington Orchestra as a replacement for Harry Carney .
In the 1980s, Temperley starred on Broadway's Sophisticated Ladies and appeared on the scores for Cotton Club , Biloxi Blues , Brighton Beach Memoirs , When Harry Met Sally, and Tune In Tomorrow .
Temperley is co-founder of the Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra , a Scottish youth development program. Temperley released a number of albums under his own name, such as Just Frieds (1978, with Jimmy Knepper ), Nightingale (1991) with pianist Brian Lemon , Sunbeam and Thundercloud with Dave McKenna (1996), With Every Breath (1998) and Double Duke (1999) with musicians from the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, of which he was a member; he also taught at the Juilliard School for Jazz Studies . In the early 1990s he worked on Joe Henderson's big band production Shade of Jade . In the field of jazz he was involved in 91 recording sessions between 1949 and 2014, according to Tom Lord . a. also with George Chisholm , Victor Feldman , Nat Gonella , Galt MacDermot , Monty Sunshine , Harry South , during his time in New York also with O'Donel Levy , Eumir Deodato , Scott Hamilton , Gerry Mulligan , Wynton Marsalis and Aaron Diehl .
