Harry South
Henry Percy, "Harry" South (* 7. September 1929 in Fulham , London; † 12. March 1990 in Lambeth , London) was a British jazz - pianist , composer and arranger .
Live and act
South was best known for his activities in the British jazz scene in the 1950s when he played with Jimmy Deuchar , Joe Harriott , Dizzy Reece , Tony Crombie and Tubby Hayes . In 1954 he was a member of the Tony Crombie Orchestra, then played in Ashley Kozak's quartet and was a member of Dick Morrissey's quartet for four years , where he also worked as a composer and arranger. In 1966 he founded his own big band , in which musicians such as Tubby Hayes, Dick Morrissey, Phil Seamen , Keith Christie , Ronnie Scott and Ian Carr played; with her he recorded an album for Mercury Records .
In the mid-1960s he worked with rhythm and blues singer and organist Georgie Fame , with whom the album Sound Venture was created. During this time he also worked as a composer and arranger for Humphrey Lyttelton , Buddy Rich , Sarah Vaughan and Jimmy Witherspoon and was the musical director for Annie Ross .
In the 1970s he worked as a session musician and wrote music for film and television productions, such as the theme song for the television series Die Füchse (The Sweeney) . He also worked as an arranger for Emerson, Lake and Palmer's album Works Vol. 1 (1977). In 1981 he worked as arranger on Annie Ross and Georgie Fames collaboration with Hoagy Carmichael with ( In Hoagland ).
In his honor, the National Youth Jazz Orchestra recorded the album Portraits - The Music Of Harry South in 2001 .
