With his brother Ian he founded a first formation in the late 1940s; then he played with Humphrey Lyttelton , where the first recordings were made. Keith Christie did his military service in the early 1950s and again led an ensemble with his brother, the Christie Brothers' Stompers , which also included Dickie Hawdon and Ken Colyer (1951-1953). After the band broke up, he played with John Dankworth , Cleo Laine , George Chisholm , Harry Klein , Kenny Baker , Vic Ash , Wally Fawkes and Tommy Whittle in the mid-1950s .
From 1957 Christie worked for Ted Heath ; this collaboration was to last until the late 1960s; also with Allan Ganley (1959–1962) in his Jazzmakers . In 1960 he went on a US tour with Vic Lewis , and otherwise worked as a freelance musician in the 1960s to 1970s with Jimmy Deuchar (1964), Harry South (1965/66) and with Tubby Hayes and Kenny Wheeler . In 1970/71 he played in Benny Goodman's orchestra on a European tour ; he also worked with Paul Gonsalves , Ian Hamer , Stan Tracey , Ronnie Ross , Phil Seamen and Tony Kinsey during this time . In the mid-1970s he suffered a fall and had to interrupt his career; he also struggled with alcoholism problems, which may have contributed to his early death.
