Vic Ash

Victor "Vic" Ash (* 9. March 1930 in London , † 24. October 2014 ) was a British jazz - clarinetist and saxophonist of Old Time Jazz and Swing .

Live and act

Vic Ash began his professional career in 1951 in the band of Kenny Baker , where he played until 1953. From 1953 to 1956 he worked with Vic Lewis , then accompanied Hoagy Carmichael and Cab Calloway on their tours through England. He was a favorite in Melody Maker magazine's fan polls in the 1950s ; During this time he also had a radio show called Sunday Break , which discussed jazz and religion. In 1954 he and his quartet recorded an album with the singer Maxine Sullivan in London. From 1957 to 1959 Ash toured the United States with his own ensemble; his ensemble was the only band to represent British jazz at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1959 . In 1960 he played with Harry Klein , Brian Dee and others in the formation The Jazz Five .

Ash remained active in the British jazz scene for many years; he played with smaller and larger formations as well as the BBC Big Band . He accompanied Frank Sinatra on his tours in Europe and the Middle East from 1970 until Sinatra's death. Ash released numerous albums on the labels Pye , Nixa and MGM , which are now out of print. Ash last lived in Chalfont St Giles , Buckinghamshire .
