James "Jimmy" Deuchar (* 26. June 1930 in Dundee ; † 9. September 1993 ) was a Scottish jazz - trumpet player and arranger of hard bop .

Live and act

Jimmy Deuchar came to London after his military service in the early 1950s and quickly established himself as the leading trumpeter of modern jazz in the local scene. He worked in the bands of Johnny Dankworth (1950/51), Jack Parnell (1952), Ronnie Scott (1953/54), Tony Crombie (1955), Lionel Hampton (1956) and again with Scott (1957), with whom he went on tour in the USA. He was also involved in the recordings of Victor Feldman .

In April 1957, Jimmy Deuchar went to Cologne to join the newly founded Kurt Edelhagens Orchestra , the first international European big band. Within the band, Deuchar formed a quintet (temporarily expanded to a sextet), which also made a number of radio recordings at WDR . The Jimmy Deuchar Quintet included a. a. the alto saxophonist Derek Humble and the trombonist Ken Wray , with whom Deuchar had already worked in London, and Jean-Louis Chautemps . As a soloist, arranger and composer, Deuchar was at times one of the most influential musicians in the Edelhagen band.

At the beginning of the 1960s he returned to England and worked again with Scott (1960–1962) and with Tubby Hayes (1962–1966). During this time he played with many American musicians in Ronnie Scott's Club. Deuchar worked again in 1966 with Edelhagen, as well as with the Kenny Clarke / Francy Boland Big Band , in which leading European and American musicians played at the time. He can be heard on their 1968 album, Three Latin Adventures , which was released by MPS . Around 1971 he returned to London and worked as a freelance musician; eventually he moved to his hometown Dundee in the mid-1970s and continued to work as a soloist and arranger.

In the Gramophone Good Jazz CD Guide, jazz critic Alun Morgan counts Jimmy Deuchar - alongside the Yugoslav trumpeter Dusko Goykovich and the Swede Rolf Ericson, one of the three most important European jazz trumpeters who come close to the standard of American musicians in the early days of modern jazz. Jimmy Deuchar is one of Scotland's most important contributions to jazz history.
