Derek Humble

Derek Humble (born May 6, 1931 in Livingston, Durham , England , † February 22, 1971 ) was a British alto saxophonist and clarinetist of modern jazz .

Act

Derek Humble began his music career as a teenager and toured with the bands of Teddy Foster. Around 1950 he played with Kathy Stobart , 1951 with Vic Lewis and 1952 with Jack Parnell . From 1953 to 1956 he was a member of Ronnie Scott's band and was involved in the 1950s on recordings by Tony Crombie , Victor Feldman , Arnold Ross , Kenny Graham and Jimmy Deuchar . In 1956 he played with Oscar Rabin , then returned to Scott for a US tour. From 1957 to 1967 Humble was a member of Kurt Edelhagen's orchestra in Cologne , during which time he also played with Heinz Kretzschmar and Dusko Goykovich . In 1961 he also worked with Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland , shortly thereafter becoming the lead alto saxophonist in the Kenny Clarke / Francy Boland Big Band . Until 1968 he went on tour with this band; During this time he was seriously injured in a fight in Cologne. Phil Woods temporarily took over his part in the Clarke-Boland Band until he got back in. In 1969 he still played with Gordon Beck , in 1970 again with Clarke-Boland, although he was no longer able to fill his part. Back in London, he worked briefly with the Phil Seamen Quartet; shortly afterwards, Humble died.
