Claudio Roditi (born May 28, 1946 in Rio de Janeiro , † January 17, 2020 in South Orange , New Jersey ) was a Brazilian jazz trumpeter and flugelhorn player.

Live and act

Roditi began his music education when he was just six years old. His father bought him his first trumpet, which he destroyed on the same day because he could not immediately play it as he wanted. Shortly afterwards his father bought him a new instrument. He also drove with him through Rio to see American big bands (like Cab Calloway's ). Thanks to his uncle, who moved his huge collection of jazz records from Chicago to Rio when he married his aunt there, he was able to study jazz very closely. In 1966 he was one of the trumpet finalists at the International Jazz Competition in Vienna. In 1970 he moved to the USA, where he studied at Berklee College of Music until 1971 . Then he played with Alan Dawson's group . In 1976 he moved to New York City , where he was hired by Charlie Rouse and Herbie Mann . In the 1980s he played with Paquito D'Rivera , who, like himself, was interested in a synthesis of jazz and Latin .

In Europe he appeared regularly in Klaus Ignatzek's band ; but he also played with Gary Bartz , with Buddy Montgomery , with Maucha Adnet , with Lula Galvão and with Michele Hendricks or Chris Connor . He also performed in the big bands of Dizzy Gillespie and Jimmy Heath . He also played in the Unterbiberger Hofmusik and Harald Rüschenbaum's orchestra . In 2009/2010 he was in Germany with Tom Reinbrecht and his band Sacred Sounds , with whom the record Ten of a Kind was created. He also played with the Trio da Paz and the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band under the direction of John Lee .

In 1995 his solo on Symphonic Bossa Nova with Ettore Stratta and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was nominated for a Grammy (best solo performance). His album Brazilliance x 4 brought him another Grammy nomination in 2009, this time in the "Best Latin Jazz Album" category. In 2018 he fell ill with prostate cancer , which came back after chemotherapy.
