The Unterbiberger Hofmusik is an ensemble from the Munich area that has been mixing folk music with jazz since 1992 . The Himpsl family provides the bulk of their cast. It belongs to the roots of new folk music or the Tradimix in Bavaria.

history

Franz Josef and Irene Himpsl are at the center of the ensemble, which is based in Unterbiberg . Trumpeter Franz Josef Himpsl changed his profession after studying classical music and his first engagements as a professional musician and studied again to become a secondary school teacher . His wife Irene Himpsl also originally comes from classical music . She studied school music with a major in piano (among others with Gitti Pirner ) and through her husband came to folk music and the accordion , which she also plays with court music. Initially without any major ambitions, the two played Bavarian folk music - for friends, at weddings and parties and above all for themselves.

But the Himpsls only cultivated folk music among other things; Franz Himpsl was also active as a jazz trumpeter . For his own advanced training, he attended a master class held by the Brazilian starter trumpeter Claudio Roditi in Stuttgart in 1992 . A loose connection developed, which was continued when Roditi played a little later with the Klaus Ignatzek Group in the Munich jazz club Unterfahrt . During a visit to Unterbiberg, the Himpsl couple surprised the guest with a Bavarian serenade. Claudio Roditi, who has an affinity for old European musical traditions, was enthusiastic, spontaneously picked up the trumpet and improvised on the game - a crossover idea was born.

But the Bavarian hosts didn't take the enthusiasm of the jazz star, who wanted to turn this session into a private concert project, very seriously. "On Palm Sunday 1994," remembers Franz Himpsl, "Roditi received a call that finally made it clear to me that he was serious about the matter."

The following year, "Bajazzo", the first CD of the Unterbiberger Hofmusik , was created over three days . Only after this recording did the studio turn into a tour project. Its success was reflected in another CD production. The original line-up of the ensemble with trumpet, accordion, harp and tuba was expanded to include trombonist Erwin Gregg. In addition, Claudio Roditi as well as Jay Ashby and Hannes Läubin came as guests .

For the next CD ("Vivamus"), recorded in the studios of Bayerischer Rundfunk , Brazilian music also came into play. There the then eleven and nine year old sons of the Himpsls, Xaver (trumpet) and Ludwig ( French horn ), played for the first time . The Australian trumpeter Andrew McNaughton has been part of the ensemble since the fourth CD .

With their CD Bavaturka, in collaboration with Şeref Dalyanoğlu and other soloists such as Matthias Schriefl and Jay Ashby, they are for the first time a mixture of Bavarian and Turkish folk culture. Franz Himpsl also learned Turkish for this project.

Since November 2013, her CD for the Christmas project "Stern über Biburg" has also been available in stores. Here they deal with the vibraphonist Wolfgang Lackerschmid and their old friend Claudio Roditi , with Christmas sounds not only from Bavaria.

In September 2015 their album Bavaturka Vol. II was released, on which they dealt even more deeply with Turkish music.

Since March 2017 her new live program has been called "Dahoam and Retour". It plays with the diverse influences that the Unterbiberger court music brought back from their tours that took them to Moscow, Egypt, India and Turkey.
