The Idar-Oberstein Jazz Days have been held annually since 1996 on three consecutive days, between the end of May and the beginning of June, as part of the Idar-Oberstein lights up culture festival by the city of Idar-Oberstein .

From Friday to Sunday, up to 25 ensembles from the fields of jazz and pop music appear on five open-air stages in the Idar pedestrian zone . The center of the event with the largest stage is on Schleiferplatz; further stages are at Café Eckstein, at Maler-Wild-Platz, at the upper end of the pedestrian zone and the Hofbühne in the middle of the pedestrian zone.

The spectrum of the music on offer ranges from bebop to zydeco . Since 1996, Hazy Osterwald , Hugo Strasser , Dusko Goykovich , the Barrelhouse Jazzband , the Frankfurt City Blues Band , Brian Auger , Ron Williams , Wolfgang Schmid , Ernie Watts , Matthias Schriefl with the Unterbiberger Hofmusik , Wolfgang Engstfeld , Rolf Kühn and soloists of the hr big band as a guest. Every year there is the Golden Swing Big Band , an amateur formation from Idar-Oberstein.

The Idar-Oberstein Jazz Days are attended by around 5000 guests each year. As admission is free, visitors are asked to buy buttons on a voluntary basis, the proceeds of which will be used to co-finance the event. The other costs are mainly borne by the city of Idar-Oberstein.
