The Unterfahrt jazz club is a jazz club in Munich . It was founded in 1978 and organizes concerts with musicians from the local and international jazz scene. The venue and club rooms have been in the basements of Einstein Kultur , Einsteinstrasse 42, since 1998 .

history

Initially, the club founded in April 1978 by Mike Uitz, Herbert Straub and Fritz Otto was located in the corner bar Zur Unterfahrt on the beginning of Kirchenstraße, at the corner of Haidenauplatz. The club is called Unterfahrt because it was there opposite a railway underpass.

Initially, the club's focus was on free jazz and was run on a voluntary basis. That changed with the founding of an association to support the club in 1980 and the reorganization by Sepp Dachsel from 1983. Today, according to Down Beat, the club is one of the “100 great jazz clubs” worldwide. It offers a broad, daily changing program with special country focuses on European jazz and international stars, but also with local young musicians in daily concerts. On Sundays there are jam sessions for young talents, on Mondays big bands like that of Dusko Goykovich play.

In 2012 the club was awarded the Music Prize of the City of Munich . In 2013, Minister of State for Culture Bernd Neumann presented the club with the venue program award 2013, which this year was awarded for the first time for the “culturally particularly high-quality live music program in 2012”. The club also received this award from 2014 to 2017, which has been presented by the State Minister for Culture Prof. Monika Grütters since 2015 under the name APPLAUS Award for program planning of independent venues .

organization

The club has been operated since 1980 by the non-profit association Förderkreis Jazz und Malerei München eV, which also organizes changing exhibitions of paintings and photographs there. The club is also financed by the city of Munich through cultural funding. The program management lies with a program committee consisting of Andreas Heuck, Wolfgang Schmid and Michael Stückl. The 1st chairman of the association is Michael Stückl. Before that, Christiane Böhnke-Geisse was responsible for program design for a long time.

The members of the association work mostly on a voluntary basis for the club, which Richard Wiedamann (head of the Bavarian Jazz Institute) believes has "an excellent international reputation".
