history

Until 2002: musical beginnings

Fadi Wassef Naguib ( Fila )

Aly Amr Fathalla (Aly) and Fadi Wassef Naguib (Fila) were both born in 1981 and have known each other since kindergarten. When they were 14 they started DJing as a hobby and when they were 17 they started producing music. In the mid and late 90s, Fila often traveled with his father, who had to go to Germany for work. When he first saw Paul van Dyk play in Berlin, his dream began to do the same professionally. Back to Egypt he often brought audio cassettes and CDs from u. a. Paul van Dyk, Steve Helstrip (The Thrillseekers) and Chicane for his best friend Aly. In 1999 they decided to give it a try together professionally and built their own small music studio. Fila began playing the piano at the age of 19 and began studying music and politics at the American University in Cairo, choosing politics just to relax his parents.

2002–2004: First publications

After establishing themselves as DJs in Egypt, Fila presented the manager of Euphonic Records with a CD with nine own productions at a conference in Germany in 2002 that specialized in electronic music . Two weeks later, Ralph Kyau , the manager, announced that the label would like to produce the 3rd track called Eye of Horus . In 2003, Eye of Horus was released and with it their first production, which landed in 4th place on the dance charts in the Netherlands and was played by artists such as Paul van Dyk , Armin Van Buuren and Tiësto (at number 1 on DJ MAG at the time ) has been. Aly & Fila were the first Egyptian DJs to go international.

When the contract with Euphonic Records expired, Fila met Andy Prinz , who then founded the label Offshore Music in 2004. From the second production Spirit of Ka was released on Offshore Music.

2005–2007: First festivals and radio shows

In 2005, Aly & Fila played for the first time on Nature One and on the main stage of Street Parade , in front of a million ravers partying peacefully. In the same year they also went on air for the first time with their own radio show Spiritual Moment , which had 63 episodes by 2008.

In February 2006, the duo went on air with the radio show Future Sound of Egypt , which can be received every Monday at 10:00 p.m. Central European time on the Internet radio station Digitally Imported (DI.FM).

On May 17th, 2007 Aly & Fila played at Armin van Buuren's festival A State of Trance 300 in 's-Hertogenbosch . Since then, Aly & Fila have been the only DJs next to Armin van Buuren (the organizer himself) who play on the anniversary episodes of A State of Trance every year . Again in a row. According to a previous forum vote by Armin van Buuren, Aly & Fila were the most popular DJ acts for episode 300 and 350. Their track Ankh reached the top of the “Dutch Dance Charts”. At the end of 2007, the trance duo was represented for the first time in the year mix of A State of Trance with How Long and their remixes of Why , Tears Of Hope and Whatever .

2008: I suffered sudden hearing loss

On August 30, 2008, Aly & Fila played at the Eurofest in Mexico. The monitor speakers were too loud and could not be controlled from the mixer. Aly Fathalla (aka Aly) suffered a sudden hearing loss in one ear and has been very careful with the rest of his hearing since then. Since then, the trance duo has only been represented by Fila at the events. On October 30, 2008, the trance duo was voted 31st for the first time in the top 100 DJs at DJ MAG .

2009–2017: Label and studio albums

In February 2009, Aly & Fila founded their own label FSOE Recordings (named after their eponymous radio show Future Sound of Egypt ), which stands for the uplifting trance . Until 2009 there were many more remixes than in-house productions. Work began on the first studio album.

On May 28, 2010, their debut album Rising Sun was released on the Armada label. They worked with talented singers and producers, including Tiff Lacey , Sue McLaren, Josie, Denise Rivera, Philippe El Sisi , Bjorn Akesson and many more. The character sound of this album is uplifting and euphoric trance. In the same year they also reached the top 20 at DJ MAG for the first time with 20th place .

On September 2, 2011, the 200th edition of Future Sound of Egypt celebrated an anniversary episode for the first time . The event took place in the Space Sharm in Sharm el-Sheikh with greats like John O'Callaghan , Roger Shah and Sied van Riel . In the 540th episode of Armin van Buuren's radio show A State of Trance , her song We Control the Sunlight was voted Tune of the Year .

In 2013 her second album Quiet Storm followed . The character sound of this album is a mixture of chill out, melodic and uplifting trance . The production time was three years. On July 6th, 2013 Aly & Fila played at Paul van Dyk 's Festival We Are One in the Citadel in Berlin. Her remix for Apprehension was voted 3rd in “ ASOT's Top 20 of 2013”.

2014 published Aly & Fila with The Other Shore her third studio album on Armada . Inspired by other cultures, genres and even eras, this album consists of Progressive Trance , Melodic Trance, Uplifting Trance and spiritual music. In addition, the track Guardian was published from a collaboration with her idol Paul van Dyk . During the year, Aly & Fila played in 46 different countries and were therefore the front runner in front of all DJs, closely followed by Martin Garrix with 45 countries in 2nd place.

In 2015, Aly & Fila once again demonstrated their artistic versatility with the album The Chill Out by completely revising 15 in-house productions. Instead of the "hammered beat", the tracks were accompanied by soft sounds and slowed down considerably, but still with the clearly recognizable Aly & Fila sound. The exceptional album is for relaxation. However, the respective tracks are not played live anywhere. With Es Vedra took place for the first time a collaboration with The Thrillseekers , who (along with Paul van Dyk and Chicane) has since the 1990s of the largest factors of Aly & Fila. In the same year they were resident DJs at the Cream Club in Ibiza . At the end of 2015 her remix for Paul van Dyk 's track Heart Like An Ocean was released on the EP (phonogram) The Politics Of Dancing 3 [Remixes] .

2016 was a particularly successful year for Aly & Fila. On February 13, 2016, they made their debut on the very popular BBC Radio 1 ' Essential Mix ' with 34 world premieres. and were thus the first trance DJs after almost 2 years (most recently Jordan Suckley on February 22, 2014) to receive this honor. On August 13, 2016, they played in front of 1.2 million people at the Street Parade in Zurich. With Unbreakable , another production was voted Tune of the Year . In addition to Unbreakable , the remaining four releases Million Voices , Kingdoms (FSOE 450 Anthem) and their remixes of Hear Me and Beautiful also landed at the top of the Beatport Trance Charts .

In 2017 Aly & Fila performed with their own Future Sound of Egypt stage at the Tomorrowland Festival in Belgium. They are already a permanent guest there in 2011. In addition, the duo released their 5th studio album, Beyond The Lights , which contains influences from deep house , techno and usually a lot of melody. Many other events are scheduled months in advance.

Future Sound of Egypt

Radio show and series of events

FSOE 300 in Prague

In February 2006, Aly & Fila went on air with their own radio show Future Sound of Egypt , which is broadcast every Wednesday at 10 p.m. on the Internet radio station Digitally Imported (DI.FM). Aly & Fila are also active as organizers of music events worldwide under Future Sound of Egypt .

FSOE recordings

In February 2009, Aly & Fila founded their own label FSOE Recordings (named after the radio show Future Sound of Egypt of the same name ) as an agency and label with the aim of discovering and promoting new talent.

Influence on the scene

Since their first production, Eye Of Horus, in 2003, their “uplifting sound” can be recognized by the speed of 138 or 140 BPM (beats per minute). Around 2006, Aly & Fila developed a pounding beat "banging" in terms of production, this "banging sound" accompanied their playing style from now on. In the same year they went on air with Future Sound of Egypt and quickly gained attention thanks to the growth of social networks (above all Facebook ).

Their final breakthrough came in 2008 at the latest when they made another qualitative leap in terms of production technology, recognizable by the clear and clean bass line. Her remixes to Armin van Buuren ’s If You Should Go and Roger Shah ’s Back To You were voted into the top 20 tracks of 2008 by A State Of Trance listeners (30 million at the time). At DJ MAG we achieved 31st place (2007: 111th place). Over the following years, this "banging sound" established itself in the uplifting trance area, which clearly differs from that of the pioneers at the time, such as B. Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten , Above & Beyond or MIKE . The releases of various artists under the label of Aly & Fila's FSOE Recordings shape today's genre.

Due to the always authentic love of Aly & Fila for the music and the annually over 100 performances as well as Aly & Fila's activity on the social networks with the active and so-called trance families , to which they proudly belong, a supernaturally loyal fan community has developed over the years. In the social networks there are so-called fan pages in over 30 countries that officially represent Aly & Fila in the respective national language. Each of these fan pages is run on a voluntary basis and serves to inform other fans about new productions, events (such as the announcement of local Aly & Fila appearances or FSOE Recordings artists).

Due to the mentioned aspects, Aly & Fila are considered to be the draft horses of today's uplifting trance and bear the great confidence of the trance community that the end of the genre is anything but foreseeable. Although the trance scene has often gone through a change between highs and lows since the beginning of the 1990s and, from a musical point of view, there has sometimes been a very contrasting change among greats such as Armin van Buuren , Paul van Dyk or Tiesto , you can see the example of Aly & Fila that there is still a progressive constancy in the scene.
