Ursel Schlicht (2015)

Ursel Schlicht , (born December 15, 1962 in Hamburg , Germany) is a German pianist and musicologist specializing in jazz, improvisation and composition.

Live and act

Schlicht studied music and art at the University of Kassel and obtained his doctorate in 1999 with Helmut Rösing and Peter Niklas Wilson at the musicological institute in Hamburg. Her book It's Gotta Be Music First. On the meaning, reception and work situation of women jazz musicians , was published in 2000 by Coda Verlag, Karben.

After completing her studies, Schlicht worked as a freelancer in Kassel . a. with the guitarist Hans Tammen (CD Statements ), Ulli Götte's Ensemble In Process , (CDs Minimal Music , Sinfonia Graduell , Norman ) and various jazz big bands.

In 1991 Schlicht organized an encounter with Eritrean and German musicians for the first time; Musicians from Afghanistan, Germany, Eritrea, India, Japan, Mali, Russia and the USA were involved in their projects and their Ex Tempore ensemble .

In 1994 Schlicht went to New York, where she worked with numerous musicians from the independent and experimental as well as the jazz scene. The CD Sound Quest was created with Steve Swell , Ken Filiano and Lou Grassi , with Bruce Arnold String Theory , with Robert Dick Photosphere , with Reuben Radding Einstein’s Dreams and with the Laura Andel Orchestra the CDs Somnambulist and In: Tension . In addition, she accompanied classical silent films with avant-garde improvisational means. a. by FW Murnau , Fritz Lang and Lotte Reiniger .

At the same time, Schlicht was continuously musically active in Kassel . a. she carried out four projects in the documenta years:

  • 1997 Ex Tempore (with the archive of the German women's movement)
  • 2002 Ex Tempore 2 (with Jamie Baum , Gabriele Hasler , Hakim Ludin , Ravish Momin, Salamat Schiftah, Tadios Tesfu, Tomas Ulrich )
  • 2007 Ex Tempore 3 (with Jamie Baum, Thomson Kneeland, David Kuckhermann, Hakim Ludin, Ravish Momin, Vladiswar Nadishana, Salamat Schiftah, Tadios Tesfu, Tomas Ulrich)
  • 2012 SonicExchange. Over 50 guests from nine countries participated in the 100-day SonicExchange project . A SonicExchange DVD was released in 2013 by Mulatta Records.

Schlicht currently plays in the Hans Tammen Third Eye Orchestra and Sarah Weaver's SLM Ensemble . She also has a sextet in New York City with Stephanie Griffin , Catherine Sikora, Josh Sinton , François Grillot and Andrew Drury , and in Germany a quintet with Detlef Landeck , Robert Dick, Christian Ramond and Klaus Kugel .

From 2002 to 2013 Schlicht taught at Columbia University , Ramapo College of New Jersey and Rutgers University in the fields of gender studies , improvisation and music history. Ursel Schlicht has lived in Germany again since summer 2013 and teaches improvisation at the University of Kassel .
