Junior Mance (actually Julian Clifford Mance Jr. , * 10. October 1928 in Chicago ) is an American jazz - pianist and - Composer .

Life

As a child, Junior Mance was tutored by his father, a stride and boogie woogie pianist. He started playing professionally during his school days. He spent two years at Roosevelt College in Chicago, leaving in 1947 to play in Gene Ammons ' band, where his musical career began. Mance played in Ammons' band until 1949. He also worked for a year with Lester Young (1948/49), then played again with Ammons before he was drafted into the US Army in 1951. He played in the 36th Army Band in Fort Knox , Kentucky , where he served with Julian "Cannonball" Adderley , Nat Adderley , and Curtis Fuller .

After his discharge from the Army in 1953, Mance worked as a sideman with musicians such as Dinah Washington (1954/55), Cannonball Adderley, and Dizzy Gillespie (1958/59) before forming his own trio in 1961, consisting of Larry Gales ( Bass) and Ben Riley (drums). Her Village Vanguard performance was recorded by Riverside Records . In 1964 he played in a trio with bassist Ron Carter and drummer Mickey Roker . He also accompanied Billie Poole with his combo . In total, Mance has recorded over thirty albums for jazz labels such as Verve , Jazzland , Riverside , Capitol , Atlantic , Milestone , Polydor , Inner City, JSP , Nilva, Sackville, Bee Hive and others.

Since 1988 Junior Mance has served on the faculty of the Jazz and Contemporary Music Program at New School University in New York City .

In 1997 Junior Mance was inducted into the International Jazz Hall of Fame .
