Kevin Hays

Kevin Hays (born May 1, 1968 in New York City ) is an American modern jazz musician ( pianist , arranger and composer ).

Hays, whose father was a hobby jazz pianist, grew up in Greenwich (Connecticut) and learned to play the piano at the age of six. At the age of 15 he had his first professional appearances, two years later he played with Nick Brignola . After studying at the Manhattan School of Music , he toured the United States, Japan and Europe, a. a. with the Harper Brothers , Benny Golson , Joe Henderson and Eddie Gomez . In 1991 he recorded his debut album Sweet Ear for SteepleChase , with Eddie Henderson , Vincent Herring , James Genusand Joe Chambers participated.

After two more productions for the label, he received a recording contract with Blue Note Records in 1994 ; then three albums appeared on the label, including Seventh Sense (1994) and Andalucia (1997) with Ron Carter and Jack DeJohnette . In 1995 Sonny Rollins brought him into his ensemble; then he went on tour with John Scofield . He also worked with his own trio and in the Bill Stewart Trio. In 2006 Kevin Hays produced a solo album for the German label ACT . He is also a member of The Sangha Quartet, where he plays with Seamus Blake , Larry Grenadier and Bill Stewart. For his album Fear of Roaming , he contributed several compositions. Around 2010 he played in his own trio with Doug Weiss on bass and Bill Stewart on drums. In 2016 he toured with Jeff Ballard and Michel Portal . His duo Hope with Lionel Loueke was highlighted by NDR as Jazz Album of the Week in 2019 .

Hays has also worked with Klaus Doldinger , Dominique Eade , Tim Hagans , Antonio Hart , Pat Metheny , Roy Haynes , Donald Harrison , Chris Potter , Al Foster , Art Farmer , Louis Smith , Jim Snidero , Mark Turner , Jeff Williams , Buster Williams and Joshua Redman .
