Doug Weiss (* 1965 in Chicago ) is an American musician ( double bass ) of modern jazz .

Live and act

Weiss grew up in Chicago; From 1988 he studied in the jazz program of William Paterson College and has worked in the New York jazz scene ever since. The first recordings were made in 1990 with Scott Kreitzer ( New York State of Mind ). In the following years he played a. a. with Jeff Williams , the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra, Chris Potter , Kevin Hays , Nils Wogram , Adam Kolker , John McKenna , Joel Frahm , İlhan Erşahin , Lee Konitz and Dave Ballou ; he toured Japan with Joe Williams in 1991. Since 1999 he has been part of the Al Foster quartet , with whom the album Three of a Mind (with Adam Birnbaum ) was created. In the 2000s he continued to play with Lizz Wright , Phil Grenadier , Brian Blade , Peter Bernstein and Eddie Henderson , from 2010 also with Marc Copland and in the formations Crosstalk (with Victor Lewis , Greg Osby , Copland) and Wayfarer (with Timothy Hill , Jeff Haynes and Brandon Ross ).

Weiss appears regularly in New York clubs like Smalls , Smoke , Kitano, Blue Note , Iridium , Birdland and the Village Vanguard , with Mike Moreno , Sam Yahel , Bruce Barth , Gerald Clayton , Chris Potter, Jim Snidero and Francisco Mela . Weiss lives in the Hudson River Valley. There he worked with Pete Seeger on his album Tomorrow's Children , which was awarded a Grammy for best children's album in 2010 . He also teaches at The New School , from 2004 at the SUNY Purchase and from 2019 also at the Berlin Jazz Institute . In the field of jazz, he was involved in 91 recording sessions between 1990 and 2019.
