Brian Blade (* 25. July 1970 in Shreveport , Louisiana ) is an American jazz - drummer and composer .

Live and act

Blade is a son of Dorothy and Brady Blade Sr., pastor of Zion Baptist Church in Shreveport, Louisiana , and the brother of Brady Blade Jr, who he followed as a drummer in his father's church. In 1988 he moved to New Orleans , where he studied with the drummer John Vidacovich and initially played with Nicholas Payton in coffee houses. He toured with Ellis Marsalis and played with Courtney Pine in England . Then he accompanied Harry Connick and was brought in 1992 by Kenny Garrett for his album Black Hope . In addition to his own band Fellowship , whose debut album was released in 1998, he was a member of the Wayne Shorter quartet , Joshua Redman's Elastic Band and Directions in Music (a project about the music of Miles Davis and John Coltrane together with Michael Brecker , Herbie Hancock and Roy Hargrove ). He also played with Bill Frisell , in the SFJazz Collective , Chick Corea , Norah Jones , Daniel Lanois , Joni Mitchell , Bob Dylan , Emmylou Harris , Marianne Faithfull and Seal . In addition to the fellowship albums from 2000 and 2008, he also produced Lizz Wright's first album Salt from 2003 together with the pianist of the band Jon Cowherd .

In 2009 he released his first album as a singer-songwriter with Mama Rosa , on which he also played guitar and sang on almost all pieces. Daniel Lanois , with whom Blade has worked repeatedly since the first Fellowship album Lanois produced, encouraged him to use recordings made at home over the years as a basis for Mama Rosa . In the same year they also formed the alternative rock band Black Dub .

In 2008, readers of Modern Drummer magazine voted him the best contemporary jazz drummer and the American Jazz Journalists Association named him Jazz Drummer of the Year in 2009. In 2015 he won the Down Beat Critic Polls.
