Freedom in the Groove is a jazz album by US saxophonist Joshua Redman from 1996.

background

As the title of the album suggests, Redman tries to explore new rhythmic areas for himself. On Freedom in the Groove , Redman gives up the traditional hard bop style of his first albums and tries to incorporate other styles from gospel to hip-hop according to the motto "I recognize musical styles, but do not consider their limits". The pieces on the album are exclusively original compositions, which were also arranged by Redman.

The first track, Hide & Seek , begins with an introduction in which Redman transforms overblown tones and tongue strokes into a funky groove . In On Shining Soul is an R & B -Adaption. Streams of Consciousness is a more contemporary piece, while Home Fries is more bluesy and invocation in the style of a gospel . The quintet, consisting of Redman, guitarist Peter Bernstein , pianist Peter Martin , bassist Christopher Thomas and drummer Brian Blade , plays (with the exception of Peter Bernstein) purely acoustic instruments.

reception

Leo Stanley wrote about the album on Allmusic :

“As the title suggests, Joshua Redman explores new rhythmic territory on Freedom in the Groove . Abandoning the traditional hard bop that has dominated his past recordings, Redman attempts to work himself into hip-hop and urban dance rhythms, which results in an occasionally intriguing but often frustrating album ... Too often, the record sounds forced and stilted, which is unfortunate, since jazz / hip-hop fusion need a musician of Redman's caliber to make it credible in the jazz world. "

“As the title suggests, Joshua Redman explores new rhythmic areas on Freedom in the Groove . Foregoing traditional hard bop, which has dominated his previous recordings, Redman tries to familiarize himself with hip-hop and urban dance rhythms, which results in a sometimes fascinating but often frustrating album ... All too often the album seems forced and contrived, which is a shame, since the jazz / hip-hop fusion needs a musician of Redman's caliber to be credible in the world of jazz. "
