Christopher Thomas

Christopher Thomas (* 1961 in Munich ) is a German photographer .

Life

Thomas is a graduate of the Bavarian Institute for Photography and works as an advertising photographer worldwide. He has received international awards for his photo reports on behalf of Geo, Stern, Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin, Merian and other magazines as well as for his advertising campaigns.

As an artist, he is best known for his city portraits: pictures of cityscapes are captured with a large-format camera and printed on handmade paper. The footage is Polaroid 55 black and white film . The city portraits began with the Munich Elegies cycle , which was shown in the Munich Photo Museum in 2005, followed by the New York Sleeps series , which was created between 2001 and 2009. The accompanying publication New York Sleeps. Photographs by Christopher Thomas from 2009 was awarded the German Photo Book Prize.

In 2010 he realized a special project: During the stage rehearsals for the Passion Play in Oberammergau, he photographed the amateur actors. The result was a cycle of portraits that are reminiscent of old master paintings and reflect the energy of the game in an incomparable way. In 2011 he received the highest award (silver) from the Art Directors Club Germany in the category "Photography" for his Passion Cycle . The Bavarian National Museum in Munich showed an extensive selection from this cycle. The German Design Award 2013 of the German Design Council in the category “Photography” went to Thomas for this work.

The Polaroid series Venice , created in 2011 and 2012 . The invisible has been shown in galleries and at trade fairs around the world.
