The SFJazz Collective is a prominent American jazz band in which "the compositional aspect plays a central role".

Band history

The SFJazz Collective ( SF stands for San Francisco ) was founded by Joshua Redman in 2004 as a project for the San Francisco Jazz Festival and directed until 2007. In addition to Redman, the octet in the first lineup included u. a. Bobby Hutcherson , Renee Rosnes , Nicholas Payton , Miguel Zenón , Josh Roseman , Robert Hurst, and Brian Blade ; Gil Goldstein acted as arranger .

The collective dedicated its programs to the work of a style-forming musician of modern jazz or black music : In the founding year Ornette Coleman , then John Coltrane (2005), Herbie Hancock (2006), Thelonious Monk (2007), Wayne Shorter (2008), McCoy Tyner (2009) and Horace Silver (2010). The members also write compositions for the ensemble and from 2007 the composer took on the role of band leader for the stage presentation. The globally touring octet is celebrated “because of its energetic stage presence and the adventurous way of playing”.

In 2005 the debut album appeared on Nonesuch Records with Coleman compositions, which was initially followed by an album each year; In 2011 the SF JazzCollective released a Stevie Wonder tribute album. In 2012 the ensemble was nominated for the JJA Awards of the American Jazz Journalists Association . In the spring of 2013, the band consisted of Miguel Zenón, David Sánchez , Avishai Cohen , Robin Eubanks , Warren Wolf , Edward Simon , Matt Penman and Obed Calvaire . Etienne Charles later switched to Cohen .
