Etienne Charles

Etienne Charles (born July 24, 1983 in Port of Spain ) is a Trinidadian jazz trumpeter who also plays flugelhorn and cuatro and works as a percussionist and singer.

Live and act

Etienne Charles first had lessons from his grandfather Ralph Charles, and he made his first professional appearances in his father Francis' steel drum band called Phase II Pan Groove . He attended the prestigious Fatima College in Port of Spain. In 2002 he moved to the United States and studied music at Florida State University and New York's Juilliard School , where he received his Masters in 2008. During this time he worked with Wynton Marsalis and Marcus Roberts .

In 2006 Charles won the National Trumpet Competition in jazz; his debut album Culture Shock was released in the same year . In his band he worked with Ronny Jordan , Vincent Gardner and Ralph MacDonald . In his music he incorporates rhythms from the Antilles , especially calypso . In 2013 he released the album Creole Soul , in which he combines R&B, Caribbean and southern music such as New Orleans jazz . In 2015 he received a Guggenheim scholarship . In 2018 he joined the SFJazz Collective ; with this he appeared in the same year at the Frankfurt Jazz Festival . In the field of jazz he was involved in 15 recording sessions between 2008 and 2018.

Since 2011 he has been teaching as an assistant professor at the Michigan State University Music College .
