Seamus Blake (born December 8, 1970 in London ) is a Canadian jazz saxophonist (tenor, soprano, EWI ).

Career

Blake grew up in Vancouver , Canada , first playing the violin and only from the age of fourteen on alto saxophone (and soon afterwards tenor saxophone) in his high school band. He studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston from the late 1980s . After graduation, he moved to New York in 1992. While still in Berklee, he recorded with the drummer Victor Lewis , in whose quintet he played. He is also a longtime member of the Mingus Big Band . He also played and recorded with Joshua Redman , John Scofield (on tour), Brad Mehldau , Randy Brecker and Michael Brecker , Kurt Rosenwinkel , Dave Douglas , Jane Monheit , Franco Ambrosetti , Joe Lovano , Jack DeJohnette , Kenny Barron , Kevin Hays and David Smith . He has his own band "The Bloomdaddies" (with Jorge Rossy , Chris Cheek , among others ), with whom he recorded an album of the same name in 1995.

Since his debut album "The Call" (Criss Cross Records) from 1993 to 2007 he recorded six albums as a leader.

In 2002 he won the Thelonious Monk Competition in Washington DC and then performed with Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock .
