David Smith (trumpeter)

David Smith (* around 1980) is a Canadian jazz trumpeter .

Smith began his professional career in Toronto ; In 2000 he moved to New York City on a Canada Council for the Arts Fellowship. He completed his studies with a Master of Arts in Jazz Performance at the Aaron Copland School of Music in New York. Since then he has worked in the local jazz scene, a. a. in the formation Sound Assembly (album Edge of the Mind (2005), among others with Alan Ferber , John Hollenbeck ), Kenny Wright, Cecilia Coleman, Russ Spiegel , Thomson Kneeland, Kim Bock, Howard Britz, Roberta Piket and the New York Jazz Initiative (Album Mad About Thad (2011) with Sam Burtis , Steve Wilson , Ralph LaLama , Eric McPherson and others ). In 2005 he produced his debut album Circumstance ( Fresh Sound Records ) with his own compositions, on which Seamus Blake , Nate Radley , David Ephross and Mark Ferber participated. In the field of jazz he was involved in 16 recording sessions between 2005 and 2012. Currently (2019) Smith leads a quintet that includes Dan Pratt , Nate Radley, Ugonna Okegwo and Allan Mednard ; he is also a member of the Dan Pugach Nonet.

Smith performed in New York jazz clubs such as Blue Note , Jazz Standard , Smalls , Cornelia Street Cafe, and 55 Bar . He is an Adjunct Professor at the College of Staten Island, CUNY.
