Sam Burtis (* 2. October 1948 in Far Rockaway ( New York )) is an American jazz - trombone . He also plays tuba , euphonium , piano and synthesizer .

Sam Burtis began playing the tuba and eventually the trombone during his school days. During this time he met Carmell Jones , Chubby Jackson and John LaPorta , who supported him in his career; so he was in 1963 a member of Chubby Jackson's band. He then studied at College in Ithaca and briefly at Berklee College of Music before moving to New York in 1967 to study a. a. to study with Jimmy Knepper .

In 1967 Burtis played with Buddy Rich and in 1968 worked with his own group. In the 1970s he was a member of the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra and the Lee Konitz Nonet; In 1971 he was involved in the Escalator over the Hill project.
