Far Rockaway is a neighborhood on the Rockaway Peninsula of New York borough of Queens . Far Rockaway refers to the easternmost section of this peninsula, roughly the area east of Beach 77th Street.

Far Rockaway has an inner-city character despite the adjacent ocean, and looks more like Asbury Park, New Jersey than New York City. Far Rockaway is one of the most distant neighborhoods in New York from Manhattan.

The physicist Richard P. Feynman was born here in 1918 .

Although it used to be mostly inhabited by Jews and Irish from Eastern Europe, today it has a large proportion of African Americans; the westernmost part of Far Rockaway is still Irish influenced.

The Far Rockaway Beach is today (2010) to the popular beaches of New York at Atlantic .
