Asbury Park at the beginning of the 20th century

Asbury Park was once a thriving seaside resort. From the late 19th century through the 1960s, the city was known as the jewel on the Jersey shore . In 1916, however, the seaside tourism-dependent city suffered a setback when many tourists avoided the beaches and seaside resorts during the shark attacks on the New Jersey coast (1916) .

Asbury Park was the site of race riots in the 1970s, along with many other cities in New Jersey. This caused many residents to leave the city. In the following years, many shops also left the city. In the past few years there has been a resurgence in the real estate market. The beach promenade in particular benefits from this.
