Asbury Park is a city in Monmouth County , United States and is located on the Atlantic Ocean . According to the 2010 census, 16,116 people live there.

The city extends over an area of 4.1 km². 3.7 km² of this is land and 0.4 km² (10.62%) is water.
Demographics
The 16,930 residents of Asbury Park, found in the 2000 census , lived in 6,754 households; including 3,586 families. The population density was very high at 5,629 per km². 7,744 residential units were recorded in the village. Of the population, 15.77% were White, 67.11% African American, 0.32% American Indian, 0.70% Asian, and 6.56% from other races; 5.53% said they belonged to several ethnic groups.
Of the 6,754 households, 31.0% had children under the age of 18; 39.4% were single households. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.36.
The population was distributed among 30.1% under 18 years of age, 10.6% between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.8% between 25 and 44 years of age, 18.3% between 45 and 64 years of age and 11.2% between 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years.
The median household income was $ 23,801 and the median family income was $ 26,370. The per capita income for Asbury Park was $ 13,516. 40.1% of the population lived below the poverty line.
history
Asbury Park was once a thriving seaside resort. From the late 19th century through the 1960s, the city was known as the jewel on the Jersey shore . In 1916, however, the seaside tourism-dependent city suffered a setback when many tourists avoided the beaches and seaside resorts during the shark attacks on the New Jersey coast (1916) .
Asbury Park was the site of race riots in the 1970s, along with many other cities in New Jersey. This caused many residents to leave the city. In the following years, many shops also left the city. In the past few years there has been a resurgence in the real estate market. The beach promenade in particular benefits from this.
Culture
Asbury Park became particularly famous in 1973 after Bruce Springsteen released his first album Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ .
In Kevin Smith's film Dogma , God took the form of an old man to play skee ball in Asbury Park.
The movie City by the Sea (2002) with Robert De Niro was filmed in various locations around Asbury Park around, although the film in Long Beach, New York played. On the other hand, the film Dark Ride (2006) starred in Asbury Park with Jamie-Lynn Sigler , although it was actually filmed in Los Angeles, California. Asbury Park is central to David Morrell's thriller Creepers (2005).
