Mike Ballerino (born April 10, 1901 in Asbury Park , New Jersey , USA , † April 4, 1965 in Tampa , Florida , USA ) was an American boxer and world champion in super featherweight .

Professional career

Ballerino was neither a “gentleman” nor a “loudmouth” in the ring. His goal was to become world champion. On October 15, 1924, he boxed compatriot Steve Sullivan for this belt. Ballerino, however, had to admit defeat in a fight scheduled for 15 rounds in the 5th round by a classic knockout . The direct rematch, which took place exactly two months later and was only scheduled for 10 rounds, was won by Ballerino on points and thus became universal world champion in welterweight.

In April of the following year he defeated Sullivan a second time. The American Tod Morgan took the world champion belt from him on December 2nd in 1925 with a technical knockout in the 10th round. After this bankruptcy, Ballerino was never “the old man” and almost only suffered defeats. His last fight, which he also lost, took place in Pennsylvania on June 27, 1928 .
