Fania Records

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fania Records is an American record label from New York that distributes Latin American music .

development

Fania Records was founded in 1964 by the flautist and band leader Johnny Pacheco and the American lawyer of Italian descent, Jerry Masucci.

The name comes from a son montuno composed by Reinaldo Bolaños . In the beginning, the record company only served to distribute Johnny Pacheco's works recorded with his orchestra. In 1968, the artists who were under contract with Fania formed the band Fania All-Stars .

Fania documented some concerts of the Fania All-Stars on film, which - like the Woodstock Festival - could also be marketed as films and videos ("Our Latin Thing", recorded in 1971 at the Cheetah Club, New York, and "Live in Africa ", 1972 in the vicinity of Rumble in the Jungle in Kinshasa).

The best and most important musicians in the Latin American world have played in "Fania All Stars" over the years, such as: B. Mongo Santamaría , Cheo Feliciano , Celia Cruz , Johnny Pacheco , Ray Barretto , Adalberto Santiago , Héctor Lavoe , Ismael Rivera , Jose Mangual Jr. , Larry Harlow , Roberto Roena , Justo Betancourt , Oscar D'León and Willie Colón .

From the 1990s the label was largely inactive. In 2006, V2 Records bought Fania through its sub-label Emusica , and a large number of the old master tapes that were believed to be lost turned up. Numerous remastered re-releases have been announced.

activity

With the production of records, films and the organization of concerts, Fania Records became the most important institution for Latin American music and made a lasting contribution to establishing the musical term salsa . About 2000 publications appeared on Fania and some labels that were bought up over time (including Cotique, Tico, Vaya, Alegre, Inca). Fania also acted as a concert agency and organized tours of its own artists around the world.
