Larry Harlow , born as Lawrence Ira Kahn, also called "El Judio Maravilloso" (born March 20, 1939 in Brooklyn ) is a salsa musician , composer and producer of American descent.

Life

Larry Harlow is the son of Jewish parents; his mother Rose Kahn with stage name Rose Sherman was an opera singer, while his father Buddy Kahn was a band leader in the Latin Quarter Nightclub under the name Buddy Harlowe.

Larry Harlow made a name for himself as a multi-instrumentalist and salsa band leader. On Cuba Larry Harlow studied the roots of Afro-Cuban music and combined them with jazz elements. The Cuban Revolution in the 1950s forced him to leave the country before he could graduate from the music college. Larry Harlow and the Orquesta Harlow was after Fania All-Stars the second group on the Fania Records label, with which Harlow produced 106 albums for other artists and 50 albums under his name. Among the most popular albums were “Abran Paso” and “Tributo a Arsenio Rodriguez” with Ismael Miranda as the lead singer. Inspired by the musical Tommy by the rock group The Who , Larry Harlow wrote Hommy , in which Celia Cruz sang. The musical was performed in New York's Carnegie Hall . Larry Harlow also played piano for the Fania All-Stars and appeared in the films Our Latin Thing (Nuestra Cosa) , Live in Africa and Salsa . In 1977 he produced La Raza Latina with Rubén Blades , which was nominated for a Grammy Award . In 1994 Larry Harlow formed the Latin Legend Band with Ray Barreto, Adalberto Santiago and Yomo Toro , which made it their mission to educate American youth about the roots and legacy of Latin American music.

Larry Harlow lives in New York with his wife and occasionally appears with the Latin Legends of Fania.
