Celia Cruz (full name Ursula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso , born  October 21,  1925 in Havana , †  July 16,  2003 in Fort Lee , New Jersey ) was a Cuban - American singer. She was one of the most prominent representatives of Cuban music of the 20th century. She is considered the Queen of Salsa ( La reina de la salsa ); Celia also has the nickname Azúcar ( sugar ), named after her exclamation that has become a salsa cult .

Cruz grew up in a working-class neighborhood in Havana. Since the 1950s she has appeared on international concert tours, first as a singer in the band Sonora Matancera , later as a solo artist. Initially, she traveled to Latin America and the USA, and later in her career she performed worldwide - including in German-speaking countries. Since 1950 she has also worked as an actress in numerous cinema and TV productions. The theme of her songs was, among other things, her Cuban homeland, which she had left for political reasons in 1960 after the Cuban revolution . After her mother's death in 1962, the government under Fidel Castro forbade her to re-enter the country to attend the funeral. In the 1970s she combined Cuban rhythms with jazz . In 1982 Celia Cruz performed at the big salsa concert of the West Berlin horizon festival " Horizonte - Festival of World Cultures " (No. 2, 1982) in the Berlin Waldbühne . One of her last solo albums is Siempre Viviré (I will always live) from the year 2000. On this album she finally bid farewell to her Cuban homeland with the song Por si Acaso no Regreso (If I don't return) in a very emotional text.

From 1962 until her death, she was married to Pedro Knight , a native Cuban and bandmate with the Sonora Matancera.

Between 1989 and 2004 (the last award was posthumous), she won a total of three Grammy Awards and four Latin Grammys for her music recordings .
