The Perez Family (Alternative title: see you in Miami , The Perez Family ) is an American comedy film of Mira Nair from the year 1995 . The plot is based on a novel by Christine Bell .
action
The plot of the film begins in 1980 during the Mariel boat crisis . Juan Raul Perez, once a Cuban political prisoner, travels to the USA, where his wife Carmela and daughter Teresa have been staying for years. On the boat he meets Dorita Evita Perez, who used to be a prostitute. Both are housed in a refugee camp. You can only leave the camp when you have found a guarantor; however, the waiting list for refugees is long. Working immigrants or families have a better chance of finding a sponsor.
Dorita dreams of getting to know John Wayne personally. She cries when she learns that the actor is already dead.
The similarity of names gives an immigration officer the idea that Juan and Dorita could say they are married. Dorita is immediately enthusiastic, but Juan rejects the idea. He's waiting for Carmela to come and pick him up. However, she prefers to flirt with the police officer John Pirelli.
Juan goes to his family's house but doesn't dare to ring the doorbell. When he touches the handle, he triggers an alarm. Juan flees; his wife sees him but does not recognize him.
Juan agrees to the proposed deception, but as a married couple you are still relatively far behind on the waiting list. Juan and Dorita find a mute senior named as grandfather and an orphan whom their son is supposed to represent. You find guarantors and a job as a flower seller.
Juan and his alleged grandfather visit Juan's brother-in-law, who however does not recognize the immigrant. He wants to call the police. Juan and the old man flee. Meanwhile, the alleged family continues to live together and behave like a real family.
Reviews
James Berardinelli criticized the cast on ReelViews ; he described Alfred Molina and Anjelica Huston, among others, as being miscast. Only the “energy-laden” (“explosion of energy”) portrayal by Marisa Tomei was praised. The strands of the plot are confusing. As a viewer, you don't feel much empathy for the characters.
Roger Ebert compared the opening scene with the scenes in the films by Federico Fellini in the Chicago Sun-Times of May 12, 1995 . The cast of the film is controversial. The Indian- born director has a particular interest in the problem of immigrants in the USA.
background
The film was in Coral Gables ( Florida ) and Puerto Rico rotated. Its production amounted to an estimated 11 million US dollars . The film grossed approximately $ 2.8 million in US cinemas.
