Sonora Matancera

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sonora Matancera is a Cuban band. The Guinness Book of Records lists them as the group that has played together the longest.

Career

La Sonora Matancera was founded in 1932 and came from the previous band Septeto Soprano , which was directed by Valentín Cané. Founding members were Valentín Cané, bassist Pablo “Bubú” Vásquez Gobín, singer Eugenio Pérez, timbale player Manuel “Jimagua” Sánchez, trumpeter Ismael Goberna and the guitarists Domingo Medina, José Manuel Valera, Julio Gobin and Juan Bautista Llópiz. In more than seven decades there have been numerous personnel changes in the group. Raúl Planas , Daniel Santos, Bienvenido Granda, Nelson Pinedo, Alberto Beltrán, Bobby Capó, Carlos Argentino and Celia Cruz sang in the group . The original leader Valentín Cané led the group until health problems forced him to retire in the early 1930s. Initially known as Septeto Soprano , the name La Sonora Matancera was adopted in 1932. The group left Cuba as the Cuban Revolution approached in the 1950s and settled in New York in the 1960s , where they continued to perform. In 2006 it is led by the over 90-year-old guitarist and singer Rogelio Martínez .

Musical style

The group is known for using trumpets in a harmonious way. This is expressed, for example, in the name "Sonora". Puerto Rican groups like Sonora Ponceña imitated their style. Other stylistic elements of La Sonora Matancera include the use of bongos and Batá drums, as well as accordion and Hammond organ . The band also became known for the nasal voice of their background singer Carlos Manuel Díaz Alonso, "Caíto", who was later imitated by well-known salsa artists such as Oscar D'León .
