from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

La Sonora Ponceña is a salsa group from Puerto Rico . She was one of the most popular groups in Latin America .

Career

La Sonora Ponceña was founded in 1954 by Enrique Lucca Caraballo and Antonio Santaella in Puerto Rico. In 1960 their first single was released in New York and in 1968 the group was supplemented by the pianist Enrique "Papo" Lucca Quiñonez (born April 10, 1946 in Yauco, Puerto Rico). Their first album "Hachero Pa 'Un Palo" contained the hit "Amor Verdadero", which made the band widely known. The group Sonora Matancera and their percussion inserts served as a model for the group La Sonora Ponceña in the early years. As early as 1960, La Sonora Ponceña had numerous appearances in the Manhattan Center and the Puerto Rico Theater. At the time they mostly played guarachas and boleros . In 1968 they first used the new technology to record LPs. New singers like Yolanda Rivera and Toñito Ledee shaped the new sound of Sonora Ponceña. "Hachero Pa 'Un Palo" and "Fuego en el 23" were great musical successes. In total they recorded 30 albums with the Inca label. In 1979 they recorded the album La Ceiba with Celia Cruz . In 1980, when the Salsa Romántica wave began, La Sonora Ponceña was at the height of her career.
