Rogelio Martínez Díaz
Rogelio Martínez Díaz , known as El Gallego (born September 7, 1905 in Matanzas , † May 13, 2001 in New York City ), was a Cuban guitarist, singer and from 1948 director of Sonora Matancera .
Martínez joined the Sonora Matancera orchestra in 1926 as a guitarist and chorus singer . In 1948 he succeeded the founder Valentín Cané as the director of the orchestra, which he led to international success. The orchestra had been based in New York since the 1960s. Martínez significantly promoted the careers of musicians such as Celia Cruz , Vicentico Valdés , Nelson Pinedo , Carlos Argentino , Bienvenido Granda , Gloria Díaz and Rodolfo Hoyos . After his death, Javier Vázquez took over the management of Sonora Matancera, which is now based in Las Vegas .
