Javier Carlos Vázquez (born July 25, 1976 in Ponce , Puerto Rico ) is a Puerto Rican baseball player in the major league . From the 2011 season he will play as a pitcher for the Florida Marlins .

Career

Vázquez began his professional career with the Montreal Expos , who selected him in the fifth round of the MLB Draft in 1994 . He had his first assignment as a pitcher in the MLB on April 3, 1998 for the Expos. For the Canadian team he was used as a starting pitcher. In December, the Expos transferred Vázquez to the New York Yankees and received Nick Johnson , Juan Rivera and Randy Choate in return . Although he was selected because of his performance with the Yankees in the AL All-Star team, he only stayed one season in New York and was transferred to the Arizona Diamondbacks in January 2005 along with other players ; the Yankees got Randy Johnson for it . Even with the Diamondbacks, Vázquez only stayed a year and was transferred to the Chicago White Sox after the end of the 2005 season .

In Chicago Vázquez was able to build on his earlier achievements. In 2007 he had a record of 15-8 with an ERA of 3.74. After a rather weak 2008 season (12-16, 4.46 ERA) Vázquez was transferred to the Atlanta Braves along with Boone Logan . Here he had the best season of his career so far in 2009 : 15-10, 2.87 ERA and 238 strikeouts in 32 starts. In the vote for the Cy Young Award , he came in fourth place.

In December 2009, Vázquez returned to the New York Yankees. By defeating the Angels on July 21, 2010, he became the third player in MLB history to beat all 30 MLB teams (alongside Barry Zito and Jamie Moyer ). However, after his performance deteriorated in August, the Yankees put Vázquez in the bullpen and gave Iván Nova fifth place in the rotation.

After the end of the 2010 season, the Yankees did not extend the contract with Vázquez. On December 2, 2010, he signed a one-year contract for $ 7 million with the Florida Marlins .

At the World Baseball Classic , Vázquez started for Puerto Rico in both 2006 and 2009 (2006: 1-0, 2.25 ERA in two starts; 2008: 2-0, 0.96 ERA in two starts).

Private life

Vázquez is married and has three children with his wife Kamille: Kamilla, Javier Josué and Kariana.
