Cy Young Award

Ferguson Jenkins' Cy Young Award in the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame

The Cy Young Award is a baseball trophy. It is since 1956 annually to the best pitcher (dt. Throwers ) of the Major League Baseball awarded (MLB). From 1956 to 1966 it was awarded to only one pitcher from the MLB each year. Since 1967 the best pitchers of the American League (AL) and the National League (NL) have been awarded separately. The creation of this award is intended to honor Cy Young , who died in 1955 .

The record winner is Roger Clemens with seven awards , followed by Randy Johnson with five awards.

history

The award's namesake: Cy Young (1902)

The Cy Young Award was created in 1956 by Ford Frick in honor of the pitcher who died in 1955 and a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame Cy Young . From 1956 to 1966, only one pitcher from the MLB was awarded the Cy Young Award each year. When Frick retired, adjustments in the electoral process made it possible to choose a pitcher from the American League and one from the National League. The first player to receive the award was Don Newcombe of the Brooklyn Dodgers . A year later, Warren Spahn was awarded the first left-handed pitcher. By 2020 Roger Clemens , Roy Halladay , Randy Johnson , Pedro Martínez , Gaylord Perry and Max Scherzer won the award in both leagues of the MLB.

Election mode

Since 1956, the winners have been chosen by a vote by the Baseball Writers' Association of America . For each city in which an MLB franchise is represented, two journalists are entitled to vote as electors. Thus 30 electors vote for the American League and 30 for the National League. The elections take place before the start of the postseason . First, second, third, fourth and fifth places are to be noted on the ballot papers. Seven points are awarded for a first place, four points for second places, three points for third places, two points for fourth places and one point for fifth places. If multiple players get the same maximum number of points, the prize will be shared.

Cy Young Award winner

Roger Clemens is a record winner with seven Cy Young Awards .
Randy Johnson is the second most successful pitcher after Clemens with five awards.
Roy Halladay is one of six pitchers to win the Cy Young Award in both leagues.
