Vida Rochelle Blue Jr. (* 2. July 1949 in Mansfield , Louisiana ) is a former American baseball - pitcher in Major League Baseball . He had his most successful time with the Oakland Athletics , with whom he won the World Series three times in a row (1972-1974). He also played for the San Francisco Giants and Kansas City Royals .

In his third year in Major League Baseball, Blue made it into the A's starting rotation in 1971 . This season he scored 24 wins versus just eight defeats and achieved an earned run average of 1.82, for which he received the Cy Young Award and was voted Most Valuable Player .

After the 1983 season, Blue admitted he had used cocaine and put his career on hold for a year. In 1985 he witnessed a trial investigating the drug use of numerous MLB players.
