Acting as a draft horse, Santana led his club from the Twin Cities to the play-offs in 2004, where they were defeated by the New York Yankees in the first round . In 2006 he managed to win the Triple Crown as a pitcher, he led the MLB in strikeouts (245), in ERA (2.77) and in wins (19, shared 1st place with Chien-Ming Wang).

On June 1, 2012, Santana threw in the Mets game against the St. Louis Cardinals, the first no-hitter in the Mets' 51-year franchise history.

Santana played his last season in 2012. He then tried repeatedly at various MLB clubs, but was unable to earn a place in a major league squad due to a serious shoulder injury and then a ruptured Achilles tendon .
