Clifton Phifer "Cliff" Lee (born August 30, 1978 ) is a starting pitcher in Major League Baseball . After many years of service for the Cleveland Indians , Lee changed teams four times from 2009 to the end of 2010 and has been playing for the Philadelphia Phillies since December 15, 2010 . Lee throws with his left and received the highest award for pitchers, the Cy Young Award , in 2008 .

Baseball career

Beginnings

Lee was drafted by the Florida Marlins in 1997 , but did not sign a contract there. In the following draft in 1998, this was repeated when no contract with the Baltimore Orioles was concluded. Instead, he played for college or university teams.

In 2000, Lee was signed by the Montreal Expos and made his debut on the AA farm team in 2002. In June he was given in a swap deal with a total of six players to the Cleveland Indians.

Cleveland Indians

2002 to 2007

In September 2002 Lee was used for the first time in the MLB. In 2003 he was only a substitute player due to injuries, but became a regular starter for the Indians from 2004 onwards. In each of more than 32 starts in the years 2004–2006, Lee was able to come up with good statistical values (e.g. 2005 with an ERA of 3.79).

In 2006 he consequently received a three-year contract for a total of 14 million US dollars until the end of the 2009 season.

For Lee, the year 2007 was marked by injuries as well as resentment within the team and towards the fans. In July 2007 he met Sammy Sosa, who was honored for his 600th home run that evening for his 600th home run, in an away game with the Texas Rangers with a ball on the head, which was criticized by his own catcher Victor Martinez . A short time later, Lee was replaced after four innings after a poor performance and ironically thanked the fans for the boos, which resulted in a transfer to the farm team the following day.

2008

In 2008 Lee reached his career high point so far. Although the team did not play for the title overall, he was able to set or achieve various records. He won u. a. 19 of the first 21 missions that could be counted as a decision (this has only been achieved by eight pitchers since 1920). In April he managed his first game of his career without an opposing run ( shutout ) (as well as another later in the season).

Accordingly, he was appointed to the All-Star Game for the first time and used there as a starter. Overall, he scored 22-3 in 31 starts with an ERA of 2.55 with 170 strikeouts in a total of 223⅓ innings. This made him the best pitcher in the American League that year in the Wins and ERA categories.

As a result, Lee received various honors, including a. the AL Cy Young Award and the Comeback Player of the Year award . Cleveland Indians pitchers were able to win the Cy Young Award for the second year in a row (after CC Sabathia in the previous year).

2009

Because of his expiring contract, Lee's name was regularly mentioned as an object of spectacular player (sales) sales during the 2009 season, although this year he had only seven wins and nine losses in 22 starts for the Indians by the end of July (which was his ERA of 3.14 but was also due to the poor team performance overall with little offensive support). Shortly before the end of the transition period, Lee signed a contract with the Philadelphia Phillies .

Philadelphia Phillies 2009

Lee on a mission for the Philadelphia Phillies.

In his first appearance for the Philadelphia Phillies, Lee threw a full game in a 5-1 win and won the next four games. In the 2009 MLB season he scored a total of 14 wins out of 13 losses, his ERA deteriorated slightly to 3.22 in a total of 231.2 innings (personal best).

Lee played his first post-season games with the Phillies. Here he delivered flawless performances: In the Division Series he threw a full game (win 5-1) in two starts and 7 ⅓ innings in the fourth game (both counted together as 1-0 with an ERA of 1.10 ). In his game three of the Championship Series, he held the Los Angeles Dodgers in eight innings with three no-run hits. He came to his first World Series appearance with a 2-0 record in three starts .

Lee started immediately in the first game against the New York Yankees and repaid manager Charlie Manuel's trust with another full game with a 6-1 win. In Game 5 of the Series Lee was able to achieve another victory in the Phillies victory 8: 6. He was the only pitcher next to Andy Pettitte of the Yankees in the 4-2 defeat of the Phillies in the World Series with two wins and an overall flawless record of 4-0 wins in five starts.

Seattle Mariners 2010

Prior to the 2010 season, Lee was sold by the Phillies to the Seattle Mariners . He made his debut on April 30th and was able to achieve a record of 8: 3 in 13 starts, including five complete games. His ERA was 2.34 ERA.

In the run-up to the All-Star Games, Lee was nominated for the American League. Because of his high salary, Lee was mentioned again as a possible purchase in connection with many teams, including a. from the Yankees, but he joined the Texas Rangers shortly before the transition period expired.

Texas Rangers 2010

The change was confirmed on July 9, 2010. Together with the Texas Rangers, Cliff Lee lost to the San Francisco Giants with 4-1 lost games in the 106th World Series in late 2010 .

Philadelphia Phillies 2011

On December 13, 2010, Cliff Lee confirmed his move back to the Philadelphia Phillies . He signed a five-year contract with the option for a sixth season.

Personal environment

Lee is married with a son and daughter.
