MLB All-Star Game

The MLB All-Star Game 2010 was the 81st edition of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game between the selection teams of the American League (AL) and the National League (NL). It took place on June 13, 2010 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim . The National League team won for the first time since 1996, securing the home advantage for the NL representative in the 2010 World Series . Before the game, there was a brief memorial service for George Steinbrenner , the owner of the New York Yankees , who died the morning of the game.

New rules

2010 saw some new rules for the All-Star Game for the first time. The designated hitter , who is only used in the AL during the season, is now an integral part of the National League team. Previously, the use of the Designated Hitter (DH) depended on whether the All-Star Game was played in the stadium on an American League team (then with DH) or a National League team (then without DH). As before, the DH of the AL team is chosen by the fans, while that of the NL team is chosen by its manager from a list of selected players.

The roster of the teams was increased to 34 players. Pitcher who started in the regular season in the Sunday game immediately before the All-Star Game cannot be used as pitchers in the game. This year, that rule affected three players on the AL team: Trevor Cahill , CC Sabathia and Jered Weaver . Nevertheless, they are considered all-stars.

Finally, the rule was extended, according to which a player who has already been substituted can be used again in the game. The manager can now reinstate a field player who has already been taken out of the game if the last available player for the position in question has suffered an injury.

Framework events

During the week of the All-Star Games, the All-Star Fan Fest took place at the Anaheim Convention Center. On July 11th, the All-Star Futures Game and the All-Star Legends and Celebrity Softball Game were held. On June 12th, the 2010 MLB Home Run Derby took place at Angel Stadium, won by David Ortiz .

Last roster place

After the announcement of the roster, a second vote took place in order to allocate the last remaining place in the roster. The online voting ran from July 4-8, 1010. The winners were Nick Swisher of the New York Yankees and Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds .

The first half of the game was dominated by the pitchers. In the fifth inning the NL had baserunner on the corners, but could not get a run. The AL, however, managed the first run by Evan Longoria in the same inning . The seventh inning was decisive. Phil Hughes allowed two singles and was replaced by Matt Thornton , who reached the next out with a pop up from Chris Young , but then loaded the bases with a walk from Marlon Byrd . A double from Brian McCann allowed all three players on base to run to the home plate and brought the score to 3-1 for the National League. It got exciting again in the ninth inning. Against NL pitcher Jonathan Broxton reached David Ortiz a single. Although he's not the fastest, AL manager Joe Girardi decided not to use Alex Rodríguez as a pinch runner. After a strikeout from Adrian Beltre , John Buck hit a single, but David Ortiz was thrown from Marlon Byrd on the way to second base. Ian Kinsler was the last batter to hit the bar, who ended the game with a fly ball into the centerfield and sealed the AL's defeat.
