Joseph Patrick Mauer (born April 19, 1983 in Saint Paul , Minnesota ) is a retired American baseball player who played as a catcher for the Minnesota Twins in Major League Baseball .

Since the beginning of his professional career in the MLB, he played for the Twins, of whom he was first drafted in 2001 .

Mauer is the first catcher in 63 years to top the MLB (2006) in the AVG batting average. He had 181 hits at 521 At Bats - that's an average of 0.347. In 2009 he was named the MVP of the American League.

He ended his career in November 2018.
