Participants and tournament mode
The total field of participants was expanded from 16 to 28 nations. Based on their placement in the 2009 World Baseball Classic , 12 countries are directly qualified for the finals. These are Australia , China , the Dominican Republic , Italy , Japan , Cuba , Mexico , the Netherlands , Puerto Rico , South Korea , USA and Venezuela .
The 4 countries Canada , Panama , South Africa and Taiwan , which already played in the World Baseball Classic 2009, but did not win a game there, and another 12 nations are contesting a qualification for the first time, the World Baseball Classic Qualifier . From Europe these are Germany , France , Great Britain , Spain and the Czech Republic . Other non-European participants in the qualifiers are Brazil , Israel , Colombia , New Zealand , Nicaragua , the Philippines and Thailand . The 4 winners of the qualifying tournaments complete the 16-country field of participants in the final round of the WBC 2013 in March.
The following game mode was agreed for the 2013 World Baseball Classic:
- In round 1, 16 teams play in four groups (A to D) in a round robin system , i.e. everyone against everyone, no series, just one game.
- In round 2 the first two of each group play in two groups (AB, CD) in double elimination mode
- The two best teams in both groups play against each other in the semi-finals (first against second) and the final
