The Tokyo Dome [ - dəʊm ] ( Japanese 東京 ド ー ム , Tōkyō Dōmu ) is a baseball stadium in the Kōraku district of the Tokyo borough of Bunkyō . It is the home stadium of the Yomiuri Giants , until 2004 the Nippon Ham Fighters played their home games there before they moved to Sapporo . In addition to baseball games, it is also used as an event center e.g. B. used for concerts, exhibitions and other sporting events.

In 2000, the opening game of American Major League Baseball took place at the Tokyo Dome, the first regular game of the Major League season outside the United States. American baseball teams visit Japan more often at the start of the season, the last time the reigning World Series winners, the Boston Red Sox , played their season opener in the Tokyo Dome in 2008 .

The Tokyo Dome is also used for major events in other sports. So in February 1990 the fight for the heavyweight boxing world championship was held there, in which Mike Tyson suffered his first defeat as a professional and surprisingly lost the title to Buster Douglas . The wrestling league New Japan Pro Wrestling holds their New Year's show there every January 4th, which is now held under the name Wrestle Kingdom .

The Tokyo Dome opened on March 18, 1988 and seats 55,000 people. Converted into a concert hall, it can hold up to 43,000 people. It was built on the old site of the Kōrakuen Stadium . The Tokyo Dome is owned and operated by the corporation of the same name , with the stadium being part of the Tokyo Dome City entertainment complex .
