James "Buster" Douglas (born April 7, 1960 in Columbus ) is a former American boxer and undisputed heavyweight boxing world champion .

Professional career

Douglas became a professional boxer in 1981. Already in the build-up phase he lost a few fights, as he was often in very bad shape. In 1985 he lost to Jesse Ferguson , but won the next fight against Greg Page , who had only recently lost his WBA title. On May 30, 1987, he competed against IBF World Champion Tony Tucker and lost by technical knockout in the tenth round. In 1989 he was able to beat Trevor Berbick and Oliver McCall each on points and thus recommend themselves for a new title fight.

On February 10, 1990 Douglas defeated in the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo with the favorite with odds of 42-1 defending champion Mike Tyson by knockout in the tenth round and was world champion in the heavyweight division . He dealt with the glorious career of Mike Tyson, who had been undefeated up to this fight, a major setback. In a post-fight interview, Douglas stated that he had done the seemingly impossible for his mother, who died two weeks prior to the fight, and dedicated his victory to her.

Nine and a half months later, Douglas lost the title in his first title defense to Evander Holyfield when he was clearly overweight in the world championship fight in the third round KO. Douglas was never able to match the performance from the fight against Tyson. A comeback attempt failed after initial success after a defeat in the fight against Lou Savarese in the first round.
