Lou Savarese (born July 14, 1965 in New York City , New York ) is a retired American boxer .
Career
Although Savarese started boxing relatively late, he was able to quickly win several national amateur tournaments. At the Olympic qualifications in 1988 he failed until Riddick Bowe .
In 1989 he started his professional career. The counter boxer was carefully set up and won all of its fights until 1997 without meeting any opponents worth mentioning.
In November 1996 he finally managed to draw attention to himself by defeating Buster Mathis Jr. prematurely . His most famous fight, and one of his best, was when he met George Foreman on April 26, 1997 for the linear world championship and the insignificant WBU title. He lost to a controversial point decision. In his next fight he suffered his second defeat in a row against David Izon , he lost by knockout in the fifth round.
In 1998 he ended the mini comeback of the weak Tyson conqueror Buster Douglas with a first round knockout. Savarese celebrated his biggest win in March 1999 against the then undefeated Lance Whitaker . Whitaker managed to knock him to the ground, but Savarese recovered and eventually won on points. The undefeated Michael Grant then beat him on points, Savarese had to go down twice.
In June 2000 he also competed against Mike Tyson , who knocked him out after only 38 seconds. He was able to defeat the over 40-year-old Tim Witherspoon prematurely in September 2002, but Kirk Johnson defeated him six months early by technical knockout in the fourth round.
"Big Lou" fought its supposedly last fight on May 7, 2004 against the undefeated, but also quite unknown Leo Nolan. Nolan won on points. After this fight Lou Savarese temporarily hung up his boxing gloves until he got back into the ring on March 18, 2006. He boxed against Marcus Rhode , whom he knocked out in the second round like five years earlier.
On June 30, 2007 he lost clearly on points against 44-year-old ex-world champion Evander Holyfield . After the fight he finally resigned from boxing.
