Kirk Johnson (born June 29, 1972 in North Preston , Canada ) is a Canadian heavyweight boxer.

amateur

Johnson was Junior Heavyweight Champion in Bayamon in 1989 . He finished second in the 1990 World Junior Championship in Lima . At the Senior Amateur World Cup in Sydney in 1991, Félix Savón lost in the second round of the tournament .

In 1992, he took over for Canada at the Olympic Games of Barcelona in part and lost early on against David Izon . His record was 82-7 (82 wins, 7 losses).

Professional career

In 1993 the very religious Johnson turned pro. In his eighth professional fight, he beat Ross Puritty on points. His talent, especially his speed, was obvious, he was usually very well trained. His clout was rather average, so he could only beat Danell Nicholson on points. The main problem seemed to be his psyche, however, against the ex-cruiserweight Al Cole he only managed a draw in 1998 because points were repeatedly deducted for low blows.

In 2000 he was considered an outsider against Oleg Maskayev . After an initially even fight, however, he managed a spectacular knockout in the fourth round: He knocked Maskayev out of the ring, similar to how Maskayev had previously succeeded against Hasim Rahman . He then defeated Larry Donald on points in an elimination match for the first position in the WBA rankings .

On July 27th there was a clash with WBA world champion John Ruiz . Johnson didn't seem to be in control of his nerves again and the ripped off Ruiz marked an unauthorized hit with every hit near the belt. So Johnson was finally disqualified for low blows in the tenth round.

In 2003 he won early against Lou Savarese and was allowed to compete in a WBC elimination match against Vitali Klitschko , but lost significantly overweight in the second round due to technical knockout.

In 2006 he injured himself against Javier Mora and had to give up the fight with a dislocated knee. The fight was initially classified as a technical knockout, but later the result was canceled because Mora Johnson stepped on the foot with the injury.
