Robinson José Canó Mercedes (born October 22, 1982 in San Pedro de Macorís , Dominican Republic ) is a Dominican baseball player in Major League Baseball (MLB). He currently plays as a second baseman for the New York Mets .
Career
Minor league
After graduating from high school, Cano was signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in 2001 and began playing on the Yankees minor league teams. There he was soon considered one of the most promising players. Although the Yankees Canó offered other clubs several times as part of planned or executed trades, he stayed in the Yankees' farm system because the respective clubs either chose other players or the trade did not materialize.
Major League
Canó was called up on May 3, 2005 by the New York Yankees in the major league and used on second base. When voting for the American League Rookie of the Year , he finished second behind Huston Street of the Oakland Athletics . The following year he was chosen for the starting place of the second baseman in MLB All-Star Game 2006, but could not play due to an injury. After his return from the DL in September 2006 Canó achieved a batting average of .373 with 7 home runs, 28 RBIs and 11 doubles and was named Player of the Month. Overall, he finished the regular season with the third best batting average in the AL and fourth best in the Major League (.342). After the end of the season, he was awarded the Silver Slugger Award for his offensive performance. After a weak start to the 2007 season, he largely built on his previous performances (batting average .306, 19 home runs, 97 RBIs in 160 games)
In January 2008, Canó extended his contract with the Yankees for $ 55 million for six years. Again he had a weak start to the season. Despite an increase during the season, he could no longer achieve the good numbers of previous years (batting average .271, 14 home runs, 72 RBIs in 159 games). In 2009 , however, he was able to show better performances again (batting average .320, 25 home runs and 85 RBIs in 161 games). It was his first season in which he hit more than 20 home runs. His 200th hit (against the Boston Red Sox ) made him and shortstop Derek Jeter the first two middle infielders in MLB history with more than 200 hits in the same season. With a batting average of .320, he finished sixth in the AL; his 204 hits were even enough for third place. He completed 161 games and thus together with Nick Markakis and Brandon Inge most of the games in the AL. He was able to crown the 2009 season by winning the World Series in 2009 .
In the 2010 season Canó managed a very good start and he was appointed for April 2010 for the American League Player of the Month. For the second time he was elected as a second baseman in the AL All-Star Team . His batting average of .319 was the fifth best in the AL. He hit 29 home runs (9th place in the AL), had 109 RBIs (7th place in the AL) and 200 hits (2nd place in the AL). He hit four home runs in the 2010 ALCS postseason when the Yankees were eliminated and had a batting average of .341. For his defensive performance at second base in the 2010 season, he received a Gold Glove for the first time . For his offensive performance, he was awarded a Silver Slugger Award for the second time.
On the last day of the 2012 season, Canó achieved 2 home runs in 4-4 and 6 RBI in a 12: 4 win over the Boston Red Sox . With that he got 24 hits in 9 consecutive games. Over a span of 9 games, only Earle Combs (1927), Lou Gehrig (1936) and Bernie Williams (2002) managed to do this . In all nine games up to the end of the season he was able to achieve at least 2 hits each time. He shares 2nd place with Ed Delahanty (1902 Washington Senators ). Only Billy Herman ended the 1935 season with a 16-game series for the Chicago Cubs .
In December 2013, Canó signed a 10-year $ 240 million deal with the Seattle Mariners .
After a drug test positive for furosemide , Canó was banned from playing 80 games in 2018.
Private life
Canó grew up in the Dominican Republic, but lived in New Jersey for three years and went to school there. His father, José Canó, was signed by the New York Yankees as a pitcher in 1980 and played six major league games for the Houston Astros in 1989 . Robinson Canó was named after the baseball legend Jackie Robinson .
