The second baseman , abbreviated 2B (German: second baseman ) is a field position in baseball . It is taken by the player who is on second base . In the official baseball notation, the second baseman is "number 4".

The second baseman covers the center of the infield and is ideally a fast player with good reflexes and a large catching radius. They often initiate a double play , which they complete with a throw to first baseman . Second basemen are almost always right-handed, as it is difficult for left-handed players to pick up a ball and throw it to the left (i.e. to first base) in the same movement.
